Ruth Thornton
General Manager

Ruth comes to us as a University of Waterloo graduate in Human Kinetics & Leisure Studies with 25+ years experience in the Health & Fitness Industry. She has held positions in sales, marketing and management in large, upscale, multi-faceted facilities

Ruth is passionate about service excellence and seeks to WOW members with the friendliness of our staff team. As a fitness enthusiast herself, Ruth finds great pleasure in supporting our members in their pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

Ruth is an avid cyclist, golf enthusiast and committed to a regular workout regime.  She can even can be found on the squash court trying to get a few points off our more seasoned players.

Gillian House

Membership Services Representative
Gillian has been an avid runner since she was a child, following in the footsteps of her father who is a seasoned ultra-marathon runner. She has traveled around Canada and to the United States to compete in various races in track, cross-country and on the road. Gillian has competed at the provincial level in both Ontario and Manitoba in both track and cross-country. Most recently, she placed 2nd, 1st and 1st overall for women in the 5km MEC Barrie Race Series (Races 1-3) in 2019.  Running is more than a fitness activity for her, it is a way of life. It satisfies her competitive nature, it is an excellent way to relieve stress and mental tension, and it keeps her body healthy. She also has a great love of volleyball and competed at the Ontario Secondary Schools Provincials in senior girls volleyball, and the Encore Sport Tours tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Gill has years of experience in sales, office administration and policy compliance and is ecstatic to have the opportunity to combine her experience with her true love of fitness and wellness.

Celeste Marcoux

Fitness Director

Celeste has always had a passion for exercise, growing up as a competitive gymnast and later moving to BC to teach skiing and further her own Alpine skiing skills. Celeste completed a Diploma in Health, Wellness and Fitness in 2016 at Mohawk college. She has since gained industry experience personal training for the YMCA, later becoming director of the group fitness department as well as working personal training clients at a local club. Celeste also gained a lot of knowledge working a contract for the military’s Personnel Support Personnel where she taught group classes, created individualized job specific programming and studied further into the specifics of sports nutrition. 

Aside from Celeste’s experience and qualifications she strives to create a fun and non-judgmental environment. Celeste is progressive and innovative. With that outlook, Celeste believes any goal can be met with the proper plan.

Laura Vermander

Registered Dietitian, Nutritionist

Laura’s focus is counseling clients on weight management, healthy lifestyle choices and navigating their way to health and wellness. Laura coaches’ clients through sustainable behaviour change, mindfulness and empowering them to self-advocate.

She has a special interest in: 

  • Weight management
  • Wellness coaching
  • Recreational sports training

Laura completed her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics at Western. Laura completed her comprehensive dietetic internship in the Clinical Nutrition Department at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.  She has also completed the Core Coach Training Program through the Wellcoaches School of Coaching.

Dr. Rehan Lakhani

Naturopathic Doctor

Dr. Lakhani is a registered Naturopathic Doctor. He has a clinical focus in:

  • Cardiovascular health including Metabolic Syndrome, Hypertension and Diabetes
  • Depression, Anxiety and Burnout
  • Fertility and Reproductive Health
  • Musculoskeletal conditions such as knee and low back pain
  • Weight Management

His other clinical interests include healthy aging,to help patients live a longer, healthier and more meaningful life.

Dr. Lakhani obtained his Bachelor of Health Sciences (hons) from the University of Western Ontario, and thereafter completed his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the Canadian College for Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Ontario.

He has completed internships at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, Queen West Toronto Community Health Centre, the Brampton Civic Hospital and Holistic Healing Arts. Dr. Lakhani is also certified by the International Society of Sports Nutrition (CISSN).

Jensen has a deep rooted passion for fitness and wellness. Having had to overcome several health challenges in his life, including curvature of the spine and various visual problems, Jensen has used fitness as a tool to reconstruct both his body and his mind.

Teri Cooney

Personal Trainer

Teri is a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer with an extensive background in aquatics. She began training and teaching over 25 years ago when Hi Lo aerobics was all the rage and step and spinning classes were just getting started. Over the years she has participated in conferences and kept up with the latest trends in fitness and continues to motivate her participants in a fun and rewarding way. Teri can adapt and modify her training to meet various needs and abilities on land and in the water.

She has trained clients of all ages and maintained long term relationships with them and integrated exercise and wellness into their busy lives.

Jenny Smith

Zumba/Dance Fit Instructor/Child Minding

Jenny grew up in the Windsor area where she began dancing at the age of 4. Now a mom of 3, with degrees in Child Psychology and Women’s Studies, she has realized how important personal fitness is to not just our physical health, but our mental health as well. She believes that a successful fitness routine should centre on something you love, after all, if you cannot have fun while working out, how do you expect to keep it up? Jenny’s classes feel like you’re at a party dancing among friends. She encourages laughter and friendly banter and uses party lights to create a dance club atmosphere. Jenny is licensed to teach Adult Zumba, Zumba Kids, Zumba Kids Jr and Zumbini. Her philosophy? – Leave your worries behind and join me on the dance floor! Remember to dance like nobody is watching, and most importantly, have fun!

Yim

Zumba Tone

Dolly Yep, is best known as “Yim”. Dolly is an active senior who loves hiking, music, dance and working out. Exercise and a healthy diet have become a way of life for Yim as she became older and wiser.

Yim has done every exercise craze since 1970, from ballet, jazz, aerobics, step, weight training, boot camp, ball, Pilates, spin, yoga and tai chi. But, in 2010, a friend introduced her to a Zumba Fitness class and she was hooked! Yim became a certified Zumba Instructor in 2012 and received her license to teach Zumba Toning in 2015.

Jeff Macinnis

SPIN

Jeff is first and foremost an explorer and athlete. Jeff is a world champion in mountain biking; he has completed 2 Eco Challenges (Borneo and New Zealand). Jeff was on the Canadian National Ski team during the Crazy Canuck era and successfully completed the first expedition to sail the Northwest passage. 

Jeff has the heart of a world- class athlete and will challenge your body, mind and spirit to elevate both your power and performance on the bike.

Emmie
Yoga


Emmie has an extensive background in dance.  She began dancing at the age of three and continued on to dance until the age of 25. She went to a high school for the performing arts, was the varsity dance coach in college and even had her own dance squad for a while.
Her first yoga experience was free yoga in the park in West Hollywood, California and she fell in love.  She practiced when she could get to classes but when she moved to England, she signed up for Bikram yoga and was hooked.  She attended classes every day and felt amazing. From then on, she would attend classes where ever she was living even if they weren’t Bikram.
However, she didn’t always have time to attend a class, and when traveling (she has traveled extensively) yoga wasn’t always readily available. So, in October of 2018 she took a one-way ticket to India where she studied yoga in an immersion YTT course to gain more knowledge and get her own practice.
Being an ex-dancer, her muscles seize up, her arthritis acts up and she physically doesn’t always feel good.   Yoga has been the only thing that makes her feel strong, healthy and centered. Her yoga practice has literally changed her life and she really loves to share this gift of yoga with others.  She adjusts her classes to her student’s abilities because when she teaches, she is there for them and she wants them to have a great experience and hopefully help them mentally, spiritually or physically. She teaches Hatha and Ashtanga, but also offers gentle stretch, and chair/accessible yoga which she is currently educating herself on.  She is always learning, researching and attending classes herself because she herself is still a student and she finds it important to constantly learn. 
One of her biggest goals with yoga while informing and educating her students is to push aside peoples fears and misconceptions of yoga.

“I believe that yoga is for everyone no matter shape or size, old or young, athlete or not, flexible, not flexible and so on.  There are many misconceptions about yoga which really affects people’s thoughts on attending classes and how they feel about yoga.  One of my goals is to go past these misconceptions and show people that yoga IS FOR YOU… IT’S FOR EVERYONE!”
